Tips for Bringing Side Dishes to a Cookout

If you’re bringing a side dish to a backyard BBQ, pool party, or neighborhood cookout, a little planning ahead can make things much easier, especially during the hot summer months.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the best cookout side dishes aren’t just delicious. They’re also easy to transport, simple to serve, and low-maintenance once you arrive.

Here are a few easy tricks that help summer entertaining feel a whole lot less stressful:

Choose Recipes That Can Be Made Ahead

One of the easiest ways to lower stress before a cookout is to make your side dish the night before. Pasta salads, coleslaw, dips, baked beans, and potato salads often taste even better after the flavors have had time to sit together overnight.

If possible, avoid recipes that require last-minute assembly right before guests arrive.

Bring Cold Dishes in a Cooler

Summer heat can quickly warm creamy side dishes. If you’re transporting pasta salad, coleslaw, dips, or potato salad, pack them inside a cooler with ice packs until it’s time to serve.

This is especially helpful if you’re traveling more than 15–20 minutes to the cookout.

This is such an easy way to keep food and drinks cool!

Use Disposable Trays or Containers

There is absolutely no shame in using disposable aluminum pans or inexpensive serving bowls for cookouts. It makes cleanup easier and saves you from hunting down your favorite casserole dish at the end of the night.

Honestly, anything that makes summer hosting simpler is worth it.

Pack the Toppings Separately

If your recipe includes crunchy toppings, fresh herbs, tortilla strips, bacon, or croutons, keep them separate until serving time. This helps everything stay fresh and keeps salads from getting soggy.

Bring a Serving Spoon

This sounds obvious, but almost every cookout has at least one person frantically asking if anyone brought serving utensils. Toss an extra spoon or tongs into your bag before heading out. Bonus points if it can be disposable.

Future you will be glad you did.

Pick Sides That Don’t Require Reheating

Cold pasta salads, dips, slaws, fruit salads, and room-temperature sides are usually the easiest options for summer gatherings because they don’t require oven space or microwave juggling once you arrive. If I am bringing more than one cold side or am concerned about food temps, I’ll use a mat like this one to give me some peace of mind.

And honestly? During busy summer weekends, easy wins every single time.
