few years ago, my friend Julie came to visit me in Phoenix, and we spent an evening catching up over drinks and dinner at Théa, the rooftop Mediterranean restaurant at The Global Ambassador. One of the things I couldn’t stop thinking about afterward was their whipped ricotta.

It was creamy, light, a little sweet, and one of those appetizers that feels much fancier than it actually needs to be.

Of course, I had to figure out how to make my own version at home.

This whipped ricotta dip takes just about 5 minutes to make with ricotta cheese, olive oil, heavy cream, lemon zest, and a drizzle of honey. Add some fresh herbs and flaky salt on top, serve it with warm bread or crostini, and you have an easy appetizer that looks impressive without spending half the afternoon in the kitchen.

It’s become one of my favorite recipes when I want something a little special without making entertaining more complicated.

This whipped ricotta dip looks like something you’d order at a restaurant, but it’s surprisingly easy to make at home.

  • READY IN 5 MINUTES – Add everything to a bowl or food processor, whip until creamy, and your appetizer is practically finished.
  • SIMPLE INGREDIENTS – Ricotta, olive oil, heavy cream, lemon, honey, and a few seasonings turn into something that tastes much more impressive than the ingredient list suggests.
  • PERFECT FOR ENTERTAINING – Serve it with warm bread, crostini, pita, or vegetables for an easy appetizer that works just as well on a charcuterie board as it does on its own.

What is Whipped Ricotta Dip?

Whipped ricotta is exactly what it sounds like: ricotta cheese that’s whipped until it becomes smooth, light, and creamy.

If you normally think of ricotta as the cheese you layer into lasagna, this feels completely different. Whipping it with a little olive oil and heavy cream changes the texture into a soft, spreadable dip that’s perfect for bread, crostini, crackers, or vegetables.

For this version, I add lemon zest to brighten everything up and finish it with honey, olive oil, flaky salt, and fresh herbs. It’s a simple combination of sweet, salty, creamy, and fresh.

Ingredients Needed for Your Whipped Ricotta Dip

  • Ricotta Cheese: This is the star of the recipe, so use a creamy, good-quality whole milk ricotta for the best texture.
  • Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: Adds smoothness and a little richness, helping the dip come together beautifully. Plus, it’s the perfect drizzle to top off the finished dip.
  • Heavy Cream: Enhances the dip’s rich, creamy consistency for a smooth, restaurant-quality texture.
  • Lemon Zest: A key ingredient to brighten up the flavors of the dip with a fresh, citrusy zing. Just a small amount adds the perfect touch.
Salt and Black Pepper: Basic seasonings that bring out the dip’s flavors, balancing the sweetness of the ricotta and honey.
  • Flaky Sea Salt: Optional, but it adds a perfect contrast to the dip’s sweetness and richness, making each bite more delicious.
  • Honey: A drizzle of honey on top adds natural sweetness that complements the ricotta’s savory richness. You can swap it for hot honey if you like a little spice.
  • Fresh Herbs: Add a burst of freshness with chopped herbs like chives, basil, or thyme. These add color and flavor, making the dip look as good as it tastes.

How to Make Creamy Whipped Ricotta Dip with Honey Drizzle

  • Prepare the Ricotta: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, olive oil, heavy cream, and lemon zest. If you’re using lemon juice, add a small squeeze to brighten the flavors. I strongly recommend BelGioioso Ricotta. Trust me, you want a creamy, high-quality ricotta for this dip to shine.
  • Season the Dip: Add a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning as needed to balance the flavors.
  • Whip It: Using a hand mixer or a food processor, whip the ingredients for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth, airy, and creamy. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a little more heavy cream or olive oil.
  • Serve: Spoon the whipped ricotta dip into a serving bowl. Use the back of a spoon to create swoops or swirls on the top for a nice presentation.
  • Top and Enjoy: Drizzle honey over the top of the dip and add a splash of olive oil. For an extra flavor boost, sprinkle with flaky sea salt and your choice of chopped fresh herbs. Serve immediately with warm bread, crostini, pita bread or chips, or raw veggies.

What to Serve with Whipped Ricotta Dip

The best part about this dip is that you can put it in the middle of a platter and surround it with whatever you already have.

  • Warm Baguette or Crostini – Probably my favorite way to serve it. The crunchy bread is perfect with the creamy ricotta and honey.
  • Warm Pita Bread – Especially good if you want to recreate that Mediterranean restaurant feel at home.
  • Pita Chips or Crackers – An easy option when you don’t want to toast bread.
  • Fresh Vegetables – Cucumbers, bell peppers, carrots, and cherry tomatoes add plenty of crunch.
  • Charcuterie Board – Add the bowl right onto a board with meats, cheeses, crackers, fruit, and nuts for an easy party appetizer.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the whipped ricotta dip a few hours ahead of time. Just cover it and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
  • Add Heat: If you like a little spice, swap regular honey for hot honey, or even drizzle with a bit of chili oil for an extra kick.
  • Experiment with Toppings: Fresh herbs are essential, but feel free to experiment with other toppings, such as crushed nuts, a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, or even caramelized onions.

Can You Make Whipped Ricotta Ahead of Time?

Yes! This is one of the reasons I love whipped ricotta for entertaining.

You can whip the ricotta mixture ahead of time, cover it tightly, and keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to serve. I prefer adding the honey, olive oil, flaky salt, and fresh herbs right before serving so everything looks fresh.

Before serving, give the ricotta a quick stir and spoon it into your serving bowl. If it has thickened slightly in the refrigerator, a small splash of heavy cream or olive oil can help bring back that smooth, creamy texture.

For the best texture and flavor, I’d make it no more than a day or two ahead.

Next time you’re looking to host a fun, low-stress gathering or just want to enjoy a treat with a friend, this creamy whipped ricotta dip is your go-to. Just like when Julie and I had a great time catching up over a delicious dip at Thea, this recipe is perfect for sharing and enjoying together, making moments even sweeter!
