My kids love visiting the local Soda Jerk Milkshake Bar and similar places in Scottsdale. Their over-the-top milkshakes are fun and delicious, but at $14+ each, they’re a bit pricey as a “just because” treat.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy them!
Today, I wanted to share an easy base shake recipe that recreates Aubrey and Owen’s favorite flavors of fun milkshakes, but in a way that anyone can make quickly!
This birthday cake shake is a dreamy, over-the-top dessert that tastes like your favorite milkshake from a stand, but it’s made right at home. With rich vanilla flavor, whipped cream, and real cake on top, this fun shake is a perfect sweet treat for birthdays, celebrations, or just because.

How to Make a Birthday Cake Milkshake
- Start by frosting the rim of your tall glass with vanilla frosting, then gently roll the edge in rainbow sprinkles. Set aside while you prepare the milkshake.
- In a blender, combine vanilla ice cream, whole milk, and vanilla frosting. Blend for at least 30 seconds until smooth and creamy. If your blender is less powerful, you may need to soften the ice cream slightly or use it for a little longer.
- Pour the milkshake into the prepared glass and top with a slice of vanilla cake. Then, pile on whipped cream (canned or homemade) and finish with a cherry. Serve immediately with a thick straw or spoon.
- You can easily double your ingredients to make 3-4 milkshakes!

Can’t Find a Mini Cake? Use Cupcakes!
If your grocery store or Walmart doesn’t have the small $5 cake, no worries. You can easily swap in one or two frosted cupcakes. You can either use a whole cupcake per shake or cut one in half and place it on top of the whipped cream instead. You’ll get the same fun look and flavor without needing to buy a whole cake.
