What are Apple Turnovers with Puff Pastry?

Apple turnovers are a yummy pastry treat, made by folding a sweet apple filling into flaky puff pastry and baking until golden brown. They’re similar to hand pies, offering a portable dessert or breakfast option that’s easy to enjoy on the go.

The filling typically consists of apples, sugar, cinnamon, and sometimes a dash of lemon juice to brighten the flavor. When baked, the pastry becomes crisp and buttery, while the inside is filled with a sweet, caramelized apple mixture. Perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth without the hassle of making a traditional pie, apple turnovers are a versatile treat enjoyed by many for breakfast, dessert, or a snack.

  • Granny Smith Apples: Known for their tartness, these apples provide a perfect contrast to the sweetness of the filling.
  • Unsalted Butter: A key ingredient that gives the apple filling a smooth, rich texture.
  • Brown Sugar: Adds a deep, molasses-like sweetness to the filling, making it the perfect complement to the apples.
  • Ground Cinnamon: The signature spice in apple turnovers, providing warmth and flavor that makes every bite special.
  • Sea Salt: A pinch of salt helps to balance the sweetness of the brown sugar and apples.

How To Make Apple Turnovers

  • Prepare the Puff Pastry: Begin by thawing your puff pastry sheets according to the package instructions. Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • Cook the Apple Filling: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the cubed Granny Smith apples and cook for about 5 minutes until they start to soften. Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt. Let it simmer for another 4 minutes, until the apples are caramelized and tender. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  • Assemble the Turnovers: Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Use a pizza cutter to cut it into four equal-sized squares. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to make the egg wash. Brush the edges of each square with the egg wash, then place a spoonful of the apple mixture in the center of each square.
  • Seal the Turnovers: Fold each square into a triangle, bringing the edges together to form a pocket. Use a fork to crimp the edges or press them with your fingers to seal tightly. Repeat with the second sheet of puff pastry.
  • Bake the Turnovers: Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top of each turnover with the remaining egg wash. Bake for 20-23 minutes, or until golden brown and flaky.
  • Finishing Touch: Once the turnovers are done, let them cool slightly before dusting them with powdered sugar. Serve warm for the best experience
