Ingredients Needed for the Maple Glaze Ham

  • Boneless Baked Ham: The star of the show! A pre-cooked, store-bought ham simplifies the process and provides a tender, juicy base for the maple glaze.
  • Apple Juice: Adds a light sweetness and fruitiness to the glaze that complements the richness of the ham.
  • Real Maple Syrup: Maple syrup brings a deep, earthy sweetness to the glaze that pairs beautifully with the ham and spices.
  • Brown Sugar: Packed brown sugar adds a rich, molasses-like sweetness, enhancing the caramelization of the glaze as it bakes.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: A touch of tang to balance the sweetness of the maple syrup and brown sugar, giving the glaze more depth.
  • Dijon Mustard: Adds a mild heat and tanginess to the glaze, cutting through the sweetness and balancing the flavors.
  • Yellow Mustard: Provides a slightly more mellow mustard flavor that blends well with the other ingredients.
  • Cornstarch: Helps thicken the glaze, giving it a smooth, glossy texture that coats the ham beautifully.
  • Ground Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, thyme, black pepper, and chili powder add layers of warmth and complexity to the glaze, making it uniquely flavorful.
  • Butter: Adds richness and helps create a smooth, luxurious glaze that perfectly coats the ham.

How To Make Your Maple Glaze Ham

  • Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 325°F. Place the boneless ham in a baking dish or shallow roasting pan. I prefer using a stone baker with a lid, but any baking dish will work if the ham fits comfortably.
  • Make the Apple Juice Glaze: In a medium saucepan, combine the apple juice, maple syrup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, thyme, black pepper, and chili powder. Whisk everything together and bring to a boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently. Add butter to the glaze and melt, thickening the mixture further.
  • Brush the Ham: Brush some apple juice maple glaze all over the ham, and coat the slices. Cover the ham with aluminum foil, place the lid on your baking dish, and bake for 20 minutes.
  • Glaze and Bake Again: After 20 minutes, remove the ham from the oven and brush the remaining glaze over it. Return the ham to the oven and bake for another 10 minutes uncovered. This gives the glaze time to set and caramelize. Be sure the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees. (Plan to bake 10-15 minutes per pound)
  • Let it Cool: After baking, allow the ham to rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This lets the juices redistribute and ensures the ham stays moist and tender. Serve the ham slices on a tray or platter.

How to Use Leftover Maple Glazed Ham

Leftover maple ham is perfect for sandwiches, especially with mustard and cheese on a hearty roll. You can also chop it up and add it to salads, omelets, or even casseroles. The sweet and savory flavor makes it a versatile ingredient for any meal!

If you have quite a bit of leftover ham, portion out your leftovers into one-pound quart-size freezer bags and throw them in the freezer for dinners later. I like to do this when I double a batch; it’s the same prep work to make the ham, but then I can save a TON of time by freezing for dinners later!
